Texas Football: 5 players to watch in summer workouts
1. Jordan Whittington, Wide Receiver
Yet another position switch for the former five-star Cuero wide receiver recruit and rising redshirt freshman Jordan Whittington means that he is back to where he originally started. Whittington switched to running back from wide receiver last offseason in spring camp, which seemed like a great move at the time by Herman and his staff.
Since Texas was drastically thin at running back during fall camp last year, the move did make sense on a reasonable level too. But a nagging sports hernia injury caused Whittington to have to go through surgery last year, and miss nearly all of his true freshman campaign. He does seem ready to go at this point.
When he spoke at media availability late last week, Herman mentioned that Whittington is doing well in drills, including running and cutting without pain. That is good news since he’ll get the chance to go through a full summer workouts routine without having to worry about too many complications, at least we hope.
Whittington only played in the regular season opener last year, where he registered 17 receiving yards on two catches. He didn’t get a single hand-off last year, in the one game he played in against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. Now that Whittington is moving back to wide receiver, we’ll see what type of impact he can make as a potential breakout star at the position.
