Texas Football: 12 biggest villains in Longhorns history
Throughout the history of the Texas football program, who are the biggest villains that Longhorn fans, coaches, and players will remember?
In its tenured and successful 118-year long history, the Texas football program built up plenty of friends and enemies along the way. And with that came some truly interesting moments, some that would work in favor or completely against the Longhorns. The bad news there for Texas is that they haven’t had a whole lot of great moments in the last decade or so, at least compared to the rest of the program’s storied history.
In the program’s history, the Longhorns hold a record of 865-365-32. They hold four official National Championships, with the last one coming in the 2005 season. Texas also holds 30 official conference titles in program history, and appeared in 56 bowl games (30-24-2 postseason record).
With all that success, the Longhorns are going to develop a good number of friends and enemies along the way. All of the success didn’t come in the most consistent manner, but they’ve found it dating back more than 100 years.
For example, there was a four year stretch in the last decade where the Longhorns either didn’t make a bowl game, or lost the one they made it to. That span lasted from 2013-2016. The streak broke with the Longhorns 2017 Texas Bowl win over the former Big 12 foe Mizzou Tigers.
Better days might be to come under the direction of current head coach Tom Herman. He’s already found more success on the gridiron and on the recruiting trail than former head coach Mack Brown did near the end of his tenure on the Forty Acres, and throughout the three years under Charlie Strong.
But the Longhorns still hold their fair share of rivals that enjoyed taking care of business against the Longhorns, and those that remain a thorn in their side.
Here’s a deeper dive into the 12 biggest villains in the 118-year long history of the Longhorns football program.
