11. TCU’s weird winning streaks in this series (in random spurts)

The story in the all-time series between the TCU Horned Frogs and the Longhorns, going all the way back to their first meeting in 1897, is one of ups and downs for each side. TCU and Texas both get a number of winning streaks going. There’s not much back and forth year-after-year. It tends to fall in favor of either the purple or burnt orange in spans of five or 10 years at a time.

For example, Texas just severed a four-game losing streak at the hands of stingy and underrated head coach Gary Patterson and the Horned Frogs back during the 2018 season. In his run as TCU’s head coach (since 2001 as the full-time head coach), Patterson holds a record of 7-3 against the Longhorns. He did his best work against Strong and Herman.

Moreover, the recent four-game winning streak the Horned Frogs held over the Longhorns was not the first time that happened. TCU took care of business against some good, and bad, Texas teams during another four-game winning streak from 1935-1938. They also had some two and three-game winning streaks mixed in during this series history too.

Texas holds the overall edge in this series with a record of 63-26-1. TCU is not the most difficult opponent Texas ran into in its program history. But the difficulties that Texas runs into against TCU tends to maximize the sadness during good and bad times.

A great example of this was TCU knocking off three top 10, and four top 15, Texas teams during one decade (in the 1940’s) alone. That included a 14-7 win for the Horned Frogs over the No. 2 ranked Longhorns during the 1941 season.
