6. Frank Broyles

Although the only national title that the Arkansas Razorbacks claimed during the lengthy tenure of legendary former head coach Frank Broyles was claimed (in 1964), he is still one of the best at his position in program history. Broyles is a legendary head coach that took Arkansas to new heights, including in one de facto National Championship Game with the Longhorns.

During his run as the Razorbacks head coach, Broyles registered a record of 144-58-5. That included a handful of two and three-game winning streaks in the series with the Longhorns. It was a very tightly contested series between the Longhorns and Razorbacks for a while while Royal and Broyles were the head coaches.

In 1964 and 1965, two No. 1 ranked Longhorns teams were defeated by the Razorbacks and Broyles. Those two Arkansas teams that knocked off the Longhorns were also both ranked in the top 10, and came by margins of three points or less. There were also a few other losses sprinkled in there for top 12 ranked Texas teams to lower ranked Arkansas squads under Broyles’ direction.

No head coach for the Arkansas program was able to be a thorn in the side of Royal and the Longhorns as much as Broyles. That’s why he’s widely considered to be one of the best head coaches, if not the overall top, in the history of that program. His memory will continue to live on in the lore of Arkansas football fans.
