Texas Football: 12 biggest villains in Longhorns history
5. Alabama Crimson Tide and the 2009 BCS National Championship Game
While some might argue that the Longhorns biggest villain to cap the 2009 season was a player on their own team, there was plenty of other factors working against them in the final game. A potent 2009 team that had title aspirations was rolling into the 2009 BCS National Championship Game.
And they would wind up taking on legendary current head coach Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide in the national title game just after New Year’s Day 2010. But the turn of the decade would not be as friendly to the Longhorns as once anticipated. Brown would see his downfall, and Alabama would start to rise on the national scene in place of Texas.
Early in the first quarter, the Texas offense was trying to find its rhythm, but Colt would go down with an upper-body injury that sidelined him for the rest of the game. That would send in the highly touted blue chip freshman quarterback Garrett Gilbert in the spotlight way too soon, though.
Gilbert would be sacked on multiple occasions in an eventual two possession loss to the Crimson Tide in the 2009 national title game. He also tossed four picks compared to just two passing touchdowns, while completing well under 50 percent of his passing attempts.
What seemed like a talented Texas team heading into the 2010 season would be plagued by bad quarterback play, not just fault on Gilbert’s shoulders, in a year where they would miss out on bowl eligibility. A program that fell into mediocrity throughout the last decade is a trend that started with the 2009 BCS National Championship Game.
