Texas Football: Ex-Longhorn Chris Simms blasts Mike Gundy
Former Texas football quarterback Chris Simms recently gave a heated response to what Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy was caught up in this week.
The college football landscape was really shaken up earlier this week when Oklahoma State Cowboys head football coach Mike Gundy was found wearing an OAN shirt in a social media post, which his star running back Chuba Hubbard then gave his thoughts on Twitter. The foe head coach and running back of the Texas football program sat in the middle of the news cycle not just in the football world, but in general headlines, in the last couple of days.
And former Longhorns star quarterback Chris Simms recently gave his thoughts on the social media post showing Gundy in the OAN shirt and the apology the Pokes head coach would later issue. He gave his thoughts on NBC Sports Pro Football Talk Overtime on June 17.
He had some lengthy thoughts about both Gundy, and what the immediate future should hold for Hubbard. Here’s what he had to say on the matter (monologue thanks to 247Sports).
"“The key there (for Hubbard) is 2,000 yards (last season) — That gave him all the power to go ‘you know what, this is wrong. I’m pretty solid on this team. I’m going to make it. I’m going to be the starting running back. I’m going to call it as I see it,” Simms said on Pro Football Talk. I don’t know what else to say about Coach Gundy. You’re tone-deaf. You’re clueless for wearing that t-shirt. I mean, there is some really radical, crazy things talked about as far as the African American culture, Black Lives Matter, all of those things by this OAN or whatever it is. I’ve come across it, too.“Just like we’ve talked about with NFL players, you want your leadership to feel some of the pain that the players are going through in this moment. That they’re backing you. To me, this is like passive-aggressive racism. He’s saying ‘yeah I support you players’ and then he’s going to go out and put this on social media to, what, appease some of the white fan base in Oklahoma? That pisses me off. I wish Chuba would have transferred and gone to another school. Go to Texas. Tom Herman will treat you better.”"
Simms had a lot of sizable takes on Gundy here, including that he thinks Hubbard should transfer to join up with head coach Tom Herman and the Longhorns. If that were to happen, it would give the Longhorns their first 2,000 yard rusher on the roster since D’Onta Foreman back in 2016.
Moreover, Simms mentioned the word “insensitive” frequently, even after considering the apology that Gundy issued on this matter. The former Longhorns star quarterback, and the third round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2003 NFL Draft, issued a sizable response that also made waves on social media on this matter.
Simms played for the Longhorns from 1999-2002, taking over as the starter eventually in favor of fellow Texas quarterback Major Applewhite. Hubbard will be entering his redshirt junior season in college after he finished in the top 10 in the Heisman voting after a big year last season with Oklahoma State.
