Texas Football: Who ESPN named as most exciting Longhorn for 2020
Who was the ESPN pick for the most exciting Texas football player, among other programs, for the looming 2020 college football season?
The 2020 season is sure to deliver a lot of fireworks for the Texas football program, no matter if that’s good or bad. Texas already had to turnover a lot of their coaching staff at the conclusion of this past regular season, including both coordinators and most position coaches. Head coach Tom Herman is armed with a new defensive coordinator to replace Todd Orlando (former Rutgers head coach Chris Ash) and a new offensive coordinator to replace Tim Beck (former Ohio State passing game coordinator Mike Yurcich).
But the Longhorns will need to see a good number of new faces step to the forefront this fall if the team is to reach new heights in the Big 12. Texas does return most of their starters from last year’s team, but they’ll need a boost to surpass the likes of the Oklahoma schools, Baylor Bears, TCU Horned Frogs, Kansas State Wildcats, etc.
Texas also has a very difficult non-conference game set for Week 2, when they are supposed to travel to Baton Rouge on Sep. 12 to take on the defending National Champion LSU Tigers at Death Valley. Tiger Stadium likely won’t be friendly to a lot of the opposition that will walk into Baton Rouge this fall.
Who can rise to the occasion and breakthrough for the Longhorns in 2020 just like Devin Duvernay and Brandon Jones did last season?
According to an ESPN list of the most exciting player from each top 25 college football team for the 2020 season, rising junior cornerback and former four-star recruit D’shawn Jamison is projected to be that guy. Jamison is one of the most notable returning starters on the defensive side of the ball for the Longhorns this coming season.
But here’s what that piece from ESPN had to say in regards to choosing Jamison as their most exciting Longhorns player for the 2020 season.
"An all-conference candidate at corner, or as a kick or punt returner, junior Jamison is a threat anytime he’s around the ball. Jamison played wide receiver as a freshman, and it showed on his leaping one-handed interception against West Virginia last year, one of two picks he had that game. In 2018, he became only the third true freshman in Texas history to return a punt for a TD (90 yards)."
It seems like the versatile threat that Jamison is makes him the most appealing candidate to pick for this category for ESPN. He registered 35 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, three interceptions, three pass deflections, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. Jamison also has one kick and one punt return for a touchdown in his career at Texas.
Once again, Jamison should be one of the most important figures both on special teams and in the secondary for the Longhorns. He should be the starting cornerback for Ash this fall, alongside fellow rising junior Jalen Green opposite of him.
Texas finished up the 2019 season with a record of 8-5 (5-4 Big 12) after beating the No. 11 ranked Utah Utes in the Alamo Bowl by the final score of 38-10. They are supposed to open up the 2020 season on Sep. 5 at home at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium against the South Florida Bulls.
