Texas Football: 3 Longhorns who transferred too early
Yet another name out of the Texas football program showing up in the NCAA Transfer Portal this offseason is an all too familiar Longhorn storyline.
In the last few years, the Texas football program lost a good number of players to the NCAA Transfer Portal. And while some of the losses to the transfer portal were warranted, not all of them were. There will always players that enter the portal that just get away from Texas, but not all of them have to place blame on the shoulders of the coaching staff.
Texas already lost a few key players to the transfer portal this offseason, including the likes of rising junior cornerback Anthony Cook and rising senior offensive lineman JP Urquidez. Urquidez already landed with an in-state Group of Five program, with the Texas State Bobcats, but Cook just put his name into the portal and is still uncommitted.
However, the transfer portal is an enormous storyline each passing offseason for the Longhorns. Across the college football landscape in general, the transfer portal greatly alters the outlook of each and every season. The rival Oklahoma Sooners are a good example of that, with landing three start quarterbacks out of the portal. Two of those would win the Heisman Trophy. And the third came close to, with former Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts, finishing as a finalist last season.
Texas has not lost too much at the quarterback position, but a lot at the skill positions. And we’ll see how the former Texas four-star quarterback recruit Cameron Rising blossoms after putting his name in the portal and transferring to join the Utah Utes.
And just to be clear, in a list like this, we’re looking into reasons why former Longhorns transferred before they could reach their true potential on the gridiron. Off-the-field reasons could be warranted and valid beyond this list.
Here’s a look into the three players that transferred away from the Longhorns in recent years all too early on in their college career.
