Texas Football: 3 Longhorn transfers who found most success elsewhere
The most notable and memorable of the recent former Longhorn transfers that found success off of the Forty Acres is the former four-star quarterback recruit and in-state product Shane Buechele. Like the other two former Longhorns on this list, the SMU Mustangs rising redshirt senior standout signal caller Shane Buechele is a Texas native.
But Buechele is a product of Lamar High School in Arlington, TX. He was one of the biggest quarterback gets in recent memory for the Longhorns out of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Buechele ranked as the nation’s No. 182 2016 high school prospect, No. 3 dual-threat quarterback, and No. 25 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).
Buechele transferred out of the Texas program following the conclusion of the 2018 season. He registered 4,636 passing yards, 34 total touchdowns, seven adjusted yards per passing attempt, and a 132.6 passer efficiency rating. Since then, he registered more than 4,000 total yards, 36 total touchdowns, 10 interceptions, 8.5 adjusted yards per passing attempt, and a 148.8 passer efficiency rating.
What sealed the fate of Buechele with the Longhorns was Herman making now rising senior star Sam Ehlinger the starting quarterback. That move made a lot of sense since Ehlinger took the program, and more specifically the offensive production, to new heights starting back during the 2018 season. He found a lot of success in elevating the SMU program under head coach Sonny Dykes.
