Up until the 2010’s, the Texas football program was one of the most consistent in the nation in developing quarterback talent to pass onto the NFL.

In a new series of rankings released on NFL.com, the top college programs in the country in terms of developing certain skill position talent to the NFL was highlighted. And the position group that actually featured the Texas football program in the top 10 was not running back or defensive back, but quarterback.

The list that was compiled by Chase Goodbread of NFL.com and released on June 29 featured the Longhorns at No. 9 on the list of top “Quarterback U” schools. There was one other school featured in the top 10 from the Big 12. That other school from the Big 12 on this list is the Longhorns rival north of the Red River, the Oklahoma Sooners (who placed at No. 2).

Factors that NFL.com used to compile the top 10 Quarterback U schools comprised of three different sectors. The first was how high up they were picked in the NFL, second was their performance during their rookie season, and the third was longevity in the NFL and accolades over time.

The former Longhorns quarterback that scored out the highest for them is the Texas dual-threat legend Vince Young. He spent most of his NFL career with the Tennessee Titans, with brief stints included with the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles.

Next up on the list from the Longhorns was current New York Giants backup Colt McCoy. During his NFL career, McCoy has also spent time with the Washington Redskins, Cleveland Browns, and San Francisco 49ers. McCoy had a much longer career than VY, though.

The only other former Longhorn quarterback that made this list was the former third round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from the 2003 NFL Draft Chris Simms. During his NFL career, Simms also spent time with the Denver Broncos and the Titans.

The team that rounded out the top 10 for Quarterback U was the NC State Wolfpack (boasting NFL signal callers like Philip Rivers, Russell Wilson, and Jacoby Brissett). And at the top of the list is the USC Trojans (including the likes of Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Sam Darnold, and Mark Sanchez).

VY and McCoy were two of the best quarterbacks in program history. Current rising senior starting Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger could wind up joining this list in the very near future too.
