Texas Football: 2006 Rose Bowl tops SC Top 10 moments of CFB history
Without a doubt, the best moment in the history of the Texas football program was also considered among the best in college football history in a SC Top 10.
The Texas football program was included in the list released from ESPN in their “SportsCenter Top 10” moments in college football history, which was released over the holiday weekend. That moment that was included from the Longhorns amid the top 10 moments in the sport’s history was the 2006 Rose Bowl win over the No. 1 ranked USC Trojans in dramatic fashion.
The specific play that was included in this top 10 was the moment when former Longhorns superstar dual-threat quarterback Vince Young scampered for a touchdown on that infamous 4th-and-5 in the dying minutes of the fourth quarter. That VY eight-yard touchdown run with less than 30 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter of the 2006 Rose Bowl/BCS National Championship Game boosted Texas to a 41-38 thrilling win over the Trojans.
That was the third rushing touchdown that VY amassed in that Rose Bowl game. He also tallied up 200 rushing yards to go along with more than 260 passing yards. VY averaged more than 10 yards per carry in this game and was tied with USC running back LenDale White for the most rushing touchdowns for either team.
Moreover, the other moments that rounded out the top three on this SC Top 10 were the trick play that saw the Boise State Broncos upset the Oklahoma Sooners in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl (No. 2) and the 1982 Cal-Stanford touchdown play with the band on the field. The 2013 “Kick-Six” touchdown return that bolstered the Auburn Tigers over the Alabama Crimson Tide was also a very notable moment in recent memory that was included in this SC Top 10 (at No. 5).
The 2006 Rose Bowl game might be the best in recent college football history. It was an instant classic that will live on in Longhorns lore for a very long time. This was also the most recent national title for the Longhorns.
Texas is in a different time now than they were during the 2005 season, to say the very least. But maybe current rising senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger can return the Longhorns to the point of national prominence, similar to where VY and Colt McCoy had them in the mid-to-late 2000’s.
