Texas Football: 3 most disappointing Longhorns QB’s since 2010
2. Tyrone Swoopes
The difficulties that the Texas offense had with Tyrone Swoopes as the starting quarterback isn’t really a burden that can be put only on his shoulders. The production in the passing game did diminish with him taking the reigns under center, but former head coach Charlie Strong never boasted the best passing attack during his three year run in Austin.
Swoopes is a former four-star athlete/dual-threat quarterback recruit that hailed from Whitewright High School in Whitewright, TX. He ranked as the nation’s No. 202 2013 high school prospect, No. 7 athlete, and No. 29 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). He was about the only answer at quarterback that Texas had during the 2013 recruiting cycle.
And under Strong’s direction during the 2014 season, Swoopes was given a big shot to make an early impact at the quarterback position. He had an up and down 2014 campaign to say the least, tallying up under 2,500 passing yards, less than 300 rushing yards, 17 total touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. But he actually posted a career best 116.5 passer efficiency rating in 2014.
During the 2015 season, Swoopes would split time behind center with a player that seemed like a rising star at the time in to-be converted wide receiver Jerrod Heard. Swoopes and Heard combined for just nine passing touchdowns for the Longhorns in 2015. The 2016 season saw Swoopes officially move into the role of the “18-wheeler package” and that was about it.
The shot at success that Swoopes had was brief, and his career production doesn’t look great. At least he delivered one of the more memorable moments of the last decade for the Longhorns.
