There could be a new prioritized target in sight for the 2021 Texas football recruiting class with Kentucky commit and 4-Star WR Dekel Crowdus.

It’s go time for the 2021 Texas football recruiting class in pursuit of solidifying the skill positions now that we are officially beyond the halfway point of this cycle. The lone wide receiver commit in the Longhorns 2021 recruiting class at this point in time is unheralded three-star Warren Easton product and Louisiana native Casey Cain.

Texas needs to at least land one more piece to the receiving corps that ranks among the top 500 high school prospects in the nation (since Cain does not). But the targets are starting to dwindle down, especially with the recent loss of the commitment of four-star Mississippi State Bulldogs wide receiver pledge Teddy Knox.

There is a new potential wide receiver target emerging as a focal point of the 2021 class. Texas is starting to put more attention into four-star Frederick Douglass wideout and Lexington, KY, native Dekel Crowdus of late. A recent Horns247 report (paid content) noted that the Longhorns and a few of their 2021 commits are putting more interest into the pursuit of this 5-foot-11 and 165 pound Kentucky Wildcats pledge.

Apparently there is a connection between the Longhorns four-star Kennedale safety commit JD Coffey III and Crowdus, and wide receivers coach Andre Coleman is trying to exploit that to get his interests over to the Forty Acres. If that connection comes to fruition, then the Longhorns might have yet another blue chip wide receiver target in their sight.

However, Crowdus did wind up picking Kentucky over offers from the Longhorns, Oklahoma Sooners, Auburn Tigers, Baylor Bears, Florida State Seminoles, Michigan Woverines, Ohio State Buckeyes, Penn State Nittany Lions, and Tennessee Volunteers. He committed to stay in-state and take his talents to join the Kentucky football program back on May 10.

The original offer from Texas to Crowdus came back on Feb. 5. The Longhorns were one of more than 20 programs to send a scholarship offer his way. And there did seem to be some level of traction along the way between Crowdus and Texas.

Crowdus ranks as the nation’s No. 248 2021 high school prospect, No. 43 wide receiver, and No. 3 prospect out of Kentucky (247Sports Composite). He’s one of the speedier and more agile wide receivers among those that have a Texas offer.

According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, the 2021 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 10 in the nation and remains ahead of the Sooners in the top spot in the Big 12. They hold 14 commits in the 2021 class, with only one coming from a wide receiver.
