There’s a lot of weight on the shoulders of Texas football quarterback Sam Ehlinger and head coach Tom Herman for the looming 2020 season.

The 2020 season for the Texas football program is going to depend so heavily on what fourth-year head coach Tom Herman and rising senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger are able to accomplish for this team in the fall. Texas needs their two most important pieces for the impending season to be at their very best.

The national view of the Longhorns and the noise they could make this fall is very mixed. But two things are well known around this program concerning Herman and Ehlinger in 2020. The first is that Herman needs to find success this year or the hot seat is really going to start ramping up for him. And the second is that Ehlinger had a very productive 2019 campaign, but he and his supporting cast have to be much improved this season when it matters most.

A piece from ESPN writer David Hale that was released back on July 7 detailed where Herman and Ehlinger ranked among the top quarterback-head coach duos in the nation. Hale actually slotted Herman and Ehlinger as the third best combination in the country among head coaches and quarterbacks. Here’s more on what Hale had to say on this matter.

"After Vince Young and Colt McCoy made Texas a QB haven in the previous decade, the Longhorns’ offense disappeared from 2010 through 2017 as the team cycled through both coaches and quarterbacks. But the marriage between Herman and Ehlinger has revived the fireworks in Austin, and their offensive success over the past two years — 80 total TDs, 8,100 yards — is on par with anything Young or McCoy produced in their heyday."

Ranked just behind Herman and Ehlinger were Minnesota quarterback Tanner Morgan and head coach PJ Fleck at No. 4, and then Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond and head coach Jimbo Fisher at No. 5. Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler and Lincoln Riley were also listed outside of the top five as the “safest gamble” amid these duos in the FBS.

The two duos that ranked ahead of the two Longhorns were warranted. The top spot when to Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence and Dabo Swinney. Behind them were Ohio State’s Justin Fields and Ryan Day.

Ehlinger did have a career year last season in terms of individual stats. He registered more than 4,000 total yards, 39 total touchdowns, and just 10 interceptions. He and Hernan could very well be facing their final shot at a Big 12 Title and College Football Playoff contention this season with the Longhorns.
