A limited list of former Texas football quarterbacks that played in the NFL does have some rather disappointing careers to look back on.

Once considered one of the top programs in terms of producing quarterback talent in the entire country, Texas football did get pushed to the wayside in this regard in the Power Five within the last decade. Texas hasn’t produced a whole lot of much talent in the way of first round picks in the NFL Draft in general throughout the 2010’s. But quarterback was a particular problem area on the Forty Acres in terms of producing NFL talent.

Throughout the 2000’s, Texas consistently produced stars at the quarterback position. Although they didn’t always turn out well in the NFL, they at least had Heisman candidates regularly rolling through Austin at this position. In the 2010’s, that trend greatly diminished. That was at least until current rising star senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger arrived on the Forty Acres.

Ehlinger could be the first former Texas quarterback drafted as early as day two of the NFL Draft coming out of this program since Colt McCoy back in 2010. But in between McCoy and Ehlinger were other quarterbacks that didn’t live up to the billing like Garrett Gilbert, David Ash, Tyrone Swoopes, Case McCoy, etc.

Looking back on quarterbacks that were drafted pretty high up into the NFL (at least in the first three or four rounds), there weren’t many that found all that much success at the next level. Former Texas legend and Chicago Bear Bobby Layne did find a good amount of success at the next level, but he is a rare case among Longhorns.

Here’s a look back at the three most disappointing former Longhorn quarterbacks that ever played in the NFL.
