Recent Oklahoma State decommit, 4-Star Summer Creek OT Kelvin Banks, could be a rising target for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class.

The momentum really should pick up on the trail soon in terms of tangible results and commitments for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class. Head coach Tom Herman and his Longhorns staff has yet to land their first commit of the 2022 class. There is still a pretty large emphasis placed on rounding out the 2021 class in the proper fashion.

A potential new target could be emerging among those highly touted 2022 high school prospects that Texas has offered thus far. On July 12, the ultra-talented four-star Summer Creek 6-foot-4 and 285 pound offensive tackle Kelvin Banks announced on his Twitter timeline that he would be decommitting from the Oklahoma State Cowboys 2022 class.

This is big news for the Longhorns since the 2021 class might not turn out as it was once anticipated to be at the offensive line positions. If Texas doesn’t hit a home run with the likes of Savion Byrd and the Brockermeyer brothers in the 2021 class, then they’re going to have to do better in the trenches for the next cycle.

And having an opportunity opening up now with Banks is a good way to get in at the right time. Banks currently holds offers from more than a dozen schools. The highlights of his offer sheet includes the Longhorns, Texas A&M Aggies, Florida State Seminoles, Oklahoma State, LSU Tigers, Oregon Ducks, Auburn Tigers, Baylor Bears, and USC Trojans.

The most recent offer that Banks received since decommitting from Oklahoma State came from the Colorado Buffaloes on July 13. He also received recent offers from the likes of Texas A&M and Auburn, among others, while he was still committed to Oklahoma State.

According to a piece from 247Sports on July 14 (paid content), the schools that could still remain in the mix for Banks includes Texas, Texas A&M, Oregon, LSU, and still Oklahoma State. It seems like Texas A&M is gaining some momentum in the pursuit of Banks’ commitment, but Texas should be prioritizing his pursuit now too.

Banks ranks as the nation’s No. 24 2022 high school prospect, No. 3 offensive tackle, and No. 7 prospect out of Texas (Top247).

And the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions does still have an edge going to Oklahoma State to land the commitment of Banks over the rest of the field, but Texas A&M is starting to catch up. Meanwhile, the Rivals FutureCast does still have all of their analysts and publishers picking him to land with the Pokes.

Texas still has yet to land a single commitment in their 2022 class. Banks could be a solid initial get, but he might be taking his time to figure out where his recruitment will go from here. But the first 2022 commit shouldn’t be all that far away for the Longhorns.
