Texas Football: 3 biggest 2021 OL targets after losing Brockermeyers
By now, the recruitment in the trenches for the Longhorns is going to boil down to two marquee names. If the Longhorns aren’t able to land either Byrd or Foster, then this recruiting class is going to be mostly considered a disappointment along the offensive line. Both Byrd and Foster rank as blue chip four-star prospects coming out of high school.
The former of those two is a product of Duncanville High School in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. This 6-foot-5 and 265 pound elite offensive tackle seems to be trending to a school that would keep him closer to home than the Longhorns would. Byrd ranks as the nation’s No. 40 2021 high school prospect, No. 6 offensive tackle, and No. 6 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).
Byrd remains as one of five offensive tackles ranked amid the top 10 prospects in the nation at their position without a commitment already announced. But the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions are favoring him pretty heavily to land with the likes of head coach Sonny Dykes, former Texas quarterback Shane Buechele, and the SMU program.
There was a time when the Longhorns had a good edge to land the commitment of Byrd over the rest of the competition. But that edge has since faded. Byrd also holds offers from more than 20 schools including the LSU Tigers, Oklahoma, Alabama, Florida State Seminoles, Georgia Bulldogs, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Oklahoma State Cowboys, TCU Horned Frogs, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech Red Raiders.
