Texas Football: 3 players to watch in mandatory workouts
1. Junior Angilau, Offensive Guard
The offensive line for the Longhorns was a particularly hot topic for debate of late. With the Longhorns missing out on the commitment of the highly coveted blue chip lineman brothers, the Brockermeyer twins, to the Alabama Crimson Tide, Texas was sent reeling on the recruiting trail to find answers for what’s next for their 2021 class.
But there are still some solid younger offensive linemen already on campus from the last two or three signing classes that still have a very bright future on the Forty Acres. Amid those promising offensive linemen is the former four-star in-state recruit and rising redshirt sophomore offensive guard Junior Angilau.
This sizable 6-foot-6 and 300 pound third-year offensive guard showed a lot of potential in his first starting role last season. He took the starting right guard role and ran with it. That led to multiple All-Big 12 Team preseason selections, including one from Phil Steele’s magazine. He is also a possible candidate to receive All-Big 12 honors this season.
Starting opposite of Angilau at guard this year for Texas should be Denzel Okafor. But former JUCO recruit and rising redshirt junior Willie Tyler could be an interesting name to watch in the battle to win a starting offensive guard spot later this year.
For the remainder of this offseason, Angilau must become a set in stone leader for his position group in the trenches.
