The rash of losses that the Texas football program experienced in the defensive backfield continued on July 18 with Kobe Boyce retiring from football.

The losses keep piling up for the Texas football program in the defensive backfield during the roller coaster ride that is the 2020 offseason. After already losing rising junior defensive back Anthony Cook and rising redshirt senior Donovan Duvernay to the NCAA Transfer Portal earlier in the offseason, another name was added to the list on July 18.

That latest addition on Saturday afternoon was rising redshirt junior cornerback Kobe Boyce. But it wasn’t the expected reasoning for players leaving the program already this offseason in Boyce’s case. This time around, it was mental health issues and depression that caused Boyce to step away from football.

The Longhorns didn’t necessarily lose Boyce to the transfer portal since he’s stepping away from football entirely. Boyce wasn’t set to hold a starting role this fall, but he was going to be a crucial part of the defensive back depth in store for recently hired defensive coordinator/safeties coach Chris Ash and cornerbacks coach Jay Valai this year.

At this point, there is going to be a lot of pressure on three particular Texas cornerbacks. That trio of corners on the Forty Acres includes rising juniors D’shawn Jamison and Jalen Green and to-be sophomore Kenyatta Watson II. Texas was also lucky to get a retroactive commitment to the 2020 recruiting class from former Baylor Bears four-star corner recruit Jahdae Barron earlier in the offseason.

With the loss of Boyce in store for the Longhorns this year, here’s a look into three possible quality transfer targets to replace the depth in the secondary.
