6. Minnesota Golden Gophers

This is another opponent of the Longhorns where the loss came a very long time ago. While the Minnesota Golden Gophers football program is still well in existence, Texas’ sole loss to them was far out of the memory of most fans of each team. Texas’ single loss to the Golden Gophers came back during the 1936 season.

Under the direction of former head coach Jack Chevigny, the Longhorns had trouble finding much of any success in 1936. Texas finished up the 1936 campaign with a record of 2-6-1 (1-5 SWC). In that loss to Minnesota in particular, this was was not all that surprising. Minnesota came into this game with the No. 2 ranking in the country, and dismantled Texas by the final score of 47-19. And this was also a season where Minnesota wound up with a National Championship, despite one loss to the vaunted No. 3 ranked (at the time) Northwestern Wildcats.

5. NC State Wolfpack

The most recent defeat for the Longhorns up to this point on the list came at the hands of the NC State Wolfpack out of the ACC. Texas opened up the 1999 season against NC State, which was still early in the tenure of Brown as head coach. NC State did come in as the underdog on Aug. 28, 1999 at the BCA Classic in Austin.

And NC State got the last laugh in that game that was back and forth, by the final score of 23-20. Former standout Seattle Seahawks and NC State wideout Koren Robinson had a game against the Longhorns and helped push them to this three-point win, along with running back Rashon Spikes.

Texas would wind up finishing off the 1999 season with a record of 9-5 (6-2 Big 12).
