4. Northwestern Wildcats

During the early 1940’s, the Northwestern football program had moments where it was one of the premier teams in the entire country. But there were also low points, like during the 1942 season. Unfortunately for the Longhorns, their only loss to Northwestern in each program’s history was also the lone win for the Wildcats in 1942.

Northwestern finished up the 1942 season with a record of 1-9 (0-6 Western). They got a narrow 3-0 win at home over the Longhorns in their second game of the 1942 campaign. What was even more disappointing for Texas that season was the fact that former legendary head coach Dana X. Bible racked up one of just two losses for this campaign.

3. South Carolina Gamecocks

By the start of the 1957 season, the Longhorns were pretty well beyond the Bible-head coaching era. But the 1957 campaign was special for them for one big reason. It was the first season under the direction of legendary head coach Darrell Royal. In this inaugural season for Royal on the Forty Acres, the Longhorns did finish up with a decent, but not great, record of 6-4-1.

But Texas had an extremely difficult schedule in 1957, including six teams all ranked in the top 17 in the AP Poll at the time they faced each of those opponents. One of the teams Texas lost to in 1957 that was not ranked at the time they faced them was the South Carolina Gamecocks. Royal’s squad just couldn’t quite overcome South Carolina at home, as they lost by the final score of 27-21.
