Texas Football: 8 opponents who have perfect records against Longhorns
2. Syracuse Orange
There are three occasions in which the Syracuse Orange faced the Longhorns in the history of each football program. The first of the three matchups came during the 1959 season, which resulted in a classic game in the Cotton Bowl. Texas actually faced Syracuse to cap the 1959 campaign on New Year’s Day 1960. That resulted in a Syracuse win by the final score of 23-14, and delivered the national title to the Orange.
The next matchup between Texas and Syracuse came during the 1992 season, when the Orange held a top 10 ranking at the time. Syracuse would best Texas in that game too by the final score of 31-21. That 1992 non-conference schedule was not kind to the Longhorns, falling short against Syracuse and the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
And the final of the three matchups came in 1993, when Texas and Syracuse tied. That is the lone tie among all the matchups on this list of Longhorn opponents.
1. Virginia Tech Hokies
The 1990’s were a difficult time for the Longhorns against some first-time opponents out of the ACC (or current ACC teams in the case of Syracuse). In this occasion, Texas fell short against legendary head coach Frank Beamer and the Virginia Tech Hokies during the 1995 season. Texas was riding high with just one loss and a No. 9 ranking in the AP Poll when they faced Virginia Tech in the 1995 Sugar Bowl.
On New Year’s Eve 1995, Texas didn’t get much of anything going offensively. Virginia Tech’s defense was dominant from the very start, and wound up guiding the Hokies to a convincing win by the final score of 28-10. Virginia Tech arguably boasted the best defense in the country that season, ranking top in the Division 1A allowing just 13.8 points per game.
