Texas football favorited to land 3-Star TE Gunnar Helm
The 2021 Texas football recruiting class appears to be making a lot of headway at the moment with 3-Star Colorado native TE Gunnar Helm.
There could finally be some bit of good news on the horizon for the 2021 Texas football recruiting class after a decent stretch of misses through most of July. Texas is in need of some form of momentum on the recruiting trail after losing out on the likes of the Brockermeyer twins at the hands of head coach Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide, especially at a position of need.
Where Texas might find help as a position of need in the 2021 class is with three-star Cherry Creek tight end Gunnar Helm. As a prospect that recently landed heavily on the Longhorns radar during the summer months, the Colorado native Helm could help out at a volatile position in this 2021 class.
Texas can’t seem to hang onto a tight end commit in the 2021 class to save their life. They already lost the commitments of unheralded three-star tight ends Lake McRee and Landen King in the last six months alone. McRee wound up flipping to join head coach Clay Helton and the USC Trojans, while King flipped to join head coach Gus Malzahn and the Auburn Tigers.
As of the afternoon of July 24, Helm holds offers from nearly 30 schools. His offer sheet grew pretty rapidly of late. The highlighting schools on his offer sheet includes Auburn, Texas, Alabama, the Wisconsin Badgers, Iowa Hawkeyes, Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Penn State Nittany Lions, TCU Horned Frogs, Tennessee Volunteers, and Washington Huskies.
But Texas appears to be the school that is sticking out to Helm of late. He recently had a self-guided visit with his family to Austin, which is a good sign of his interest in the program. The 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions are also starting to give Texas the heavy edge to land the commitment of Helm over the rest of the field.
The Rivals FutureCast also has 83 percent of their analysts and publishers picking Helm to commit to Texas over the rest of the field. It’s becoming pretty clear at this point that Texas is starting to win over the interests of Helm at a key time in his recruitment.
Moreover, Helm ranks as the nation’s No. 567 2021 high school prospect, No. 26 tight end, and No. 6 prospect out of Colorado (247Sports Composite). He holds a similar recruiting ranking to that of King and McRee, so Texas wouldn’t really be missing out on all that much by getting him over those two in the 2021 class.
According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2021 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 12 in the nation and remains in the top spot in the Big 12. But the Oklahoma Sooners are creeping up fast, sitting at No. 13 in the national class rankings.
