The quarterback position was fairly often a problematic position to recruit outside of two particular stars for head coach Mack Brown with Texas football.

During his tenure as head coach of the Texas football program, Mack Brown put together a pretty impressive run. That was until he reached the 2010’s as Texas head coach. Brown couldn’t get much of anything going in the 2010’s for Texas like he was able to during the previous decade. Texas reached its peak in recent history during the 2000’s under Brown’s wing.

Not to say that the 2011-2013 seasons were terrible for the Longhorns, but they definitely didn’t live up to the billing of what is usually expected on the Forty Acres. Given the vast amount of resources that this Texas program has, it is usually considered unacceptable to go all that long without succeeding on the national level.

Succeeding on the national level usually means, back then at least, semi-regular appearances in the BCS National Championship Game and winning the Big 12 Championship fairly often. Texas used to do that under Brown’s direction, but that trend came to a halt under former head coach Charlie Strong. And while current head coach Tom Herman is doing a bit better, Texas still isn’t quite there yet.

What helped Brown succeed so much on the gridiron was that special combination of recruiting success on the national scene along with solid player development. Recruiting well, even on the national scene, still wasn’t a problem for Strong or Herman. It is that trend of poor player development that continues to haunt the Longhorns.

But even Brown had his stints of poor player development. No head coach, no matter how legendary, was able to hit on every single blue chip commit they ever landed. Given that, here’s a look back at the three most disappointing blue chip commits Brown ever brought to the Forty Acres.
