Texas Football: 3 most crucial injuries through summer workouts

2. Tarik Black, Wide Receiver

The lone addition for the Longhorns out of the transfer portal so far this offseason is the former Michigan Wolverines rising senior grad transfer wide receiver Tarik Black. While Texas could add at least one more name out of the transfer portal before the start of fall camp, Black is likely going to be the most significant overall.

He was brought into the mix to fill depth issues in the receiving corps after Texas lost the experienced star wideout pairing of Collin Johnson and Devin Duvernay to eligibility. Johnson landed with the Jacksonville Jaguars in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, and Duvernay went to the Baltimore Ravens in the third round.

However, Black adds another big-bodied receiver to this Texas passing game that could be a threat on the outside. Rising senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger could really use a target in the passing game like Black, as long as he’s able to stay healthy.

That’s why it’s so concerning that a player that pretty constantly struggled with lower-body injuries during his time with Michigan has another problem that’s holding him out of workouts. Black was one of the early hamstring injuries that Texas dealt with in the midst of summer workouts. But it doesn’t appear to be anything that’s going to hold him out long-term.

The timetable for his return to football activities this offseason should be before the start of fall camp. That would be big for the Longhorns. Black brings 40 career catches for 507 yards and two touchdown catches from his three years playing for Michigan.
