The bottom two

Among the former walk-ons, the Longhorns have two names that will round out the six officially on the quarterback depth chart. In terms of highly touted former walk-ons, Texas did have a very good one in the former three-star recruit and ex-Southern Miss Golden Eagles commit Sam Saxton. But here’s the first two up on the depth chart.

6. Skyler Bonneau, Junior

Texas is going to do their best to get value out of a potentially multiple weapon as a former preferred walk on. This 6-foot-1 and 212 pound rising junior quarterback/running back Skyler Bonneau is going to be last up on the depth chart. He’s a former product of Coppell High School and also played at West Texas A&M. He didn’t hold any significant Division 1 offers before landing on the Forty Acres.

Bonneau is just as likely, though, to get reps at quarterback as he is running back. Actually he might be more likely to get game action at running back since Texas has proved injury prone there in the past.

5. Ben Ballard, Redshirt Freshman

Another former preferred walk-on for the Longhorns, the 5-foot-11 and 200 pound ex-Hyde Park Baptist dual-threat quarterback and Austin, TX, native Ben Ballard isn’t likely a name to watch in game action unless there is a detrimental set of injuries at this position. The rising redshirt freshman only held a few scout looks from FCS schools coming out of high school.

Ballard does have a decent arm, and is smart with the football. But his skill set isn’t cut out for the Power Five level of play, especially the high-powered offenses in the Big 12.
