Texas Football: Building out QB depth chart for 2020
The last two
And we’ve finally arrived at the last two names on the depth chart, and two the most recognizable for the Longhorns at the quarterback position. This could give us a good idea as to where Herman and recently hired offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich are leaning to find their next starting quarterback once Ehlinger is done on the Forty Acres.
2. Casey Thompson, Redshirt Sophomore
Oh how glad we are now that the rising redshirt sophomore dual-threat quarterback and former four-star recruit Casey Thompson didn’t keep his name in the NCAA Transfer Portal last offseason. The elusive quarterback with a lot of arm strength has the second greatest amount of experience behind Ehlinger on this depth chart.
But that doesn’t say much since all Thompson has is eight career completions for 84 passing yards, no passing touchdowns, and no interceptions. He’s added 22 rushing yards and one touchdown on the ground.
1. Sam Ehlinger, Senior
The best and most proven quarterback by far on this Longhorns team also rounds out the quarterback depth chart. The rising senior star Ehlinger is going to be the determining factor to so much of Texas’ success come this fall. That is a lot of pressure to fall on his shoulders, but it also should be nothing new to him either.
What Ehlinger brings with him this fall is roughly 10,000 career total yards, 93 total touchdowns, 22 interceptions, and a 143.4 passer efficiency rating. Last season, Ehlinger registered 3,663 passing yards, 32 passing touchdowns, seven rushing touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
