Impact 4-Star 2022 WR Phaizon Wilson brings for Texas football
A big get for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class arrived, with their first commit, on July 31 by way of 4-Star WR Phaizon Wilson.
It is finally here. The first commit of the 2022 Texas football recruiting class arrived on July 31, with four-star Lancaster sizable 6-foot-4 and 210 pound wide receiver Phaizon Wilson committing to the Longhorns over offers from more than a dozen other schools. This is a notable day on the recruiting trail for head coach Tom Herman and the Longhorns.
Getting a win on the recruiting trail at the wide receiver position for either the 2021 or 2022 class was huge for both Herman and recently promoted wide receivers coach Andre Coleman. Coleman specifically needed his first big win on the recruiting trail since taking over as the sole wide receivers coach in the place of the departed Corby Meekins and Drew Mehringer earlier in the offseason.
However, what the Longhorns get out of the in-state product Wilson is the nation’s No. 245 2022 high school prospect, No. 31 wide receiver, and No. 33 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). ESPN ranks him as the No. 48 player in the region, No. 32 wide receiver, and No. 34 prospect out of Texas.
Wilson held 16 offers prior to announcing his commitment to Texas. The highlighting schools on his offer sheet included the Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers, Texas A&M Aggies, SMU Mustangs, Florida Gators, Ole Miss Rebels, Mizzou Tigers, Texas Tech Red Raiders, Arkansas Razorbacks, and Kansas Jayhawks. The most recent scholarship offer he received prior to committing to Texas came from Auburn, back on June 27.

He announced his commitment to Texas on his Twitter timeline on Friday evening. For the second time this month, the Longhorns really headed into a weekend on the right foot. And this is a really big get for the Longhorns.
The commitment from Wilson is the first one the Longhorns have got that is still with either a current recruiting class or signed with them already since four-star in-state product Troy Omeire. The former Texas A&M commit Omeire signed with the Longhorns 2020 recruiting class.
What the Longhorns are getting in Wilson is a very sizable possession receiver that can be a dominant force over opposing defensive backs. He’s already got a big frame that can overwhelm opposing cornerbacks and safeties. Wilson showed a rather impressive amount of elusiveness and agility for a receiver of his size and stature too.
Wilson is actually a fairly comparable prospect to that of Omeire. He shows a lot of similarities to the Longhorns 2020 four-star wide receiver signee in his 7-on-7 and limited high school football film. Both have a lot of twitchiness off the line of scrimmage for what you would expect out of a tall possession receiver.
Landing the commitment from Wilson now brings the Longhorns to the No. 17 ranked 2022 recruiting class in the nation, per the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings. They are also up to second in the Big 12 recruiting rankings, behind the Oklahoma Sooners. Texas and Oklahoma, along with the Baylor Bears and Oklahoma State Cowboys, are the lone Big 12 programs with 2022 commits at the end of the month of July.
Where Texas goes from here is a much clearer picture in the 2022 class after getting the pledge from Wilson. This is a massive get for the Longhorns, and is hard to quantify in terms of the long-term impact that it could carry on the trail. Getting Wilson as the initial commit in the 2022 class is one of the most notable bits of news for the Longhorns on the recruiting trail in a long time.
