Texas Football: 3 NFL QB’s the Longhorns defense shut down
In the last decade, who are three notable NFL quarterbacks now that the Texas football program was able to shut down when they faced off?
Throughout the 2010’s, the Texas football program got mixed results from each side of the ball, especially in Big 12 play. Texas did have some pretty solid defenses in the latter years under former head coach Mack Brown and mostly throughout the tenure of fellow former Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong.
The problem for Strong during his three years as the Texas head coach was definitely not the play of the defense. He just couldn’t get anything going for that passing game, and relied all too heavily on the ground game. Given the evolution that the Big 12 was going through at the time (and somewhat still is), only playing solid defense and having a decent ground game didn’t wind up leading to much success in the win column.
But there were still a few impressive incidents where the Longhorns were able to shut down some talented opposing quarterbacks during the previous decade. Quite a few of those were NFL-caliber quarterbacks, that are well known at the next level.
It is also noteworthy that the Longhorns were able to shut down some talented opposing quarterbacks since they didn’t have much to offer at the position of their own. Up until current rising senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger broke through during the 2018 season, Texas really struggled to find answer at this position. Head coach Tom Herman is still doing well to stockpile the quarterback room with talent and depth well into the future.
Here’s a look into the three opposing quarterbacks that the Longhorns shut down in the past decade that are now playing in the NFL.
