Texas Football: Montrell Estell looking like a stud in fall camp
With the start of training/fall camp underway (and the first fall scrimmage in the rear view mirror), the Texas football program is seeing new faces rise.
Over the weekend, the Texas football program got their first fall scrimmage underway and they got to show off some new digs in the process. Texas both got to participate in their first fall scrimmage on Aug. 15, as well as get to show off them playing in the new look Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in the south endzone.
This is a big weekend for the Longhorns since they have to ramp up really fast for the season to start next month. Texas is supposed to open up the 2020 regular season schedule on Sep. 12 at home at DKR against the UTEP Miners out of the Conference-USA.
Getting going in scrimmages and full pad and full contact practices are going to be key for the Longhorns to get ready for what will likely be a fast start to the 2020 season. Texas also has their Big 12 opener on Sep. 26 at home against the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Given this, the Longhorns are starting to see their first real set of standouts come to the forefront in training camp/fall scrimmages on both sides of the ball. One name that apparently stuck out in the first fall scrimmage this weekend was the rising junior defensive back Montrell Estell.

Estell reportedly (per head coach Tom Herman on Horns247, paid content) had a good stint in this initial fall scrimmage, and a good first week of fall practice in general. The report also mentioned that the likes of incoming freshman former five-star recruit and defensive tackle Alfred Collins was huge in this scrimmage, along with the pair of second-year wide receivers Jordan Whittington and Jake Smith.
But it’s nice to hear that Texas is getting an unheralded defensive back rising to the occasion. Texas is going to need as many underrated names as possible to step up through what has been a very long offseason in the midst of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Estell had limited playing time in his first two years playing on the Forty Acres. He registered 30 total tackles, one tackle for loss, one interception, and one pass deflection, during his last two years playing for the Longhorns.
The former 6-foot-2 and 180 pound Hooks High School athlete product hailing out of Hooks, TX, might get his first real shot to make an impact for the Longhorns secondary this fall. Coming out of high school, Estell ranked as the nation’s No. 234 2017 high school prospect, No. 11 athlete, and No. 37 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).
Estell should be competing for playing time in the Texas secondary behind the likes of rising junior defensive backs Caden Sterns, Anthony Cook, B.J. Foster, and D’shawn Jamison. But he could be one of the more crucial backups to watch early this fall.
