Texas Football: A&M TE pushes for recruits to consider Longhorns
The 2022 Texas football recruiting class landing a massive pledge on Aug. 14 that got a huge reaction on social media this weekend.
In the best news that the Texas football program received in a long time on the recruiting trail, the 2022 class was able to get a commitment from the elite five-star Southlake Carroll pro-style quarterback Quinn Ewers heading into the weekend. Ewers is the top ranked 2022 prospect in the nation, and the highest rated Texas quarterback commit since the legendary dual-threat Vince Young (back with the 2002 recruiting class).
And there was a pretty crazy reaction on social media thereafter to the commitment of Ewers with head coach Tom Herman and the Longhorns. Even the in-state rival Texas A&M Aggies had one of their current players chip in to the reaction on Twitter.
In a tweet that is now deleted (with a screen shot posted from the Longhorns Wire of the USA Today Network), Texas A&M 2020 signee and true freshman tight end Blake Smith came out with a controversial take from the Aggie perspective. He tweeted out (again in a post that is now deleted) that he would consider committing to Texas now, and it is worth considering especially as a tight end or wide receiver.
But this post from Smith makes more sense knowing that he is a product of Southlake Carroll High School in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, and he was a teammate of Ewers’ for a bit of time. Smith was a three-star tight end recruit that stands at 6-foot-4 and 257 pounds. He did have a good bit of attention from top tier programs around the country pursuing him on the trail.
He held offers from more than 30 schools. The highlighting schools on his offer sheet included the Alabama Crimson Tide, Baylor Bears, Florida State Seminoles, LSU Tigers, Miami Hurricanes, Michigan Wolverines, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Ohio State Buckeyes, Oklahoma State Cowboys, TCU Horned Frogs, and Washington Huskies.
Smith ranked as the nation’s No. 588 2020 high school prospect, No. 24 tight end, and No. 74 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). The Longhorns were not one of the 33 schools that sent a scholarship offer Smith’s way.
Moreover, Ewers was the second commit in the Longhorns 2022 class. The first came from four-star Lancaster wide receiver Phaizon Wilson. Landing the commitment of Ewers is sure to continue to make waves on the recruiting trail for the Longhorns 2022 class.
