The potential breakthrough freshman Texas football wide receiver and former four-star recruit Troy Omeire could miss 2020 with a knee injury.

A bit of news that could be completely devastating both to the receiving corps for the Texas football program, and one particular potential breakthrough talent, dropped over the weekend. The former four-star Fort Bend Austin High School wide receiver recruit and incoming true freshman Troy Omeire could reportedly (247Sports) miss the entire 2020 season with a lower-body injury sustained in fall camp.

Apparently head coach Tom Herman mentioned after the first fall scrimmage this weekend that the injury that Omeire sustained was to his knee, and that it was just a tweak. But the report from 247Sports mentions that it is more than a tweak, and that something could be torn. Anything of that sort could always be devastating right before the start of the regular season.

Omeire would not get all that much time to recover if he was to make his Longhorns debut at some point during his true freshman campaign. Texas is set to begin the 2020 season at home on Sep. 12 against the UTEP Miners. And the start to the Big 12 slate is set to come against the Texas Tech Red Raiders at home on Sep. 26.

Given that fall/training camp got off to a very abrupt start in the midst of the novel coronavirus pandemic, coming back from a possible injury like this for Omeire could be tremendously difficult (as if it wasn’t already during normal times). If there is in fact something torn for Omeire, the rehab process will take a good while, and it is very unfortunate that he sustained this type of injury in the Longhorns initial fall scrimmage.

What makes matters worse for the Longhorns and Omeire is how good he looked in the brief stints he had thus far in camp and the first fall scrimmage. Some of the highlights that were shown off from him on social media showed the type of potential special talent he could be right away on the Forty Acres.

Hopefully whatever injury news winds up officially coming out for Omeire isn’t a very substantial tear in his knee. He was one of three Longhorns apparently sustaining notable injuries in the first fall scrimmage. The other two were rising junior linebacker Juwan Mitchell and redshirt sophomore wide receiver Al’Vonte Woodard.

Next. NFL QB's that the Texas defense shut down. dark

Omeire is a four-star wide receiver recruit and Sugar Land, TX, native that signed with the Longhorns as part of their 2020 class. He ranked as the nation’s No. 240 2020 high school prospect, No. 42 wide receiver, and No. 37 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).
