Texas Football: Former 4-Star QB commit Jalen Milroe flips to Alabama
A sizable hit to the 2021 Texas football recruiting class was delivered with the announcement that 4-Star QB Jalen Milroe would flip to Alabama.
The aftereffect of landing the massive commitment to the 2022 Texas football recruiting class, with the elite five-star Southlake Carroll pro-style quarterback Quinn Ewers, is really starting to emerge for head coach Tom Herman and his program. The recruiting trail looks like it will be a volatile spot for the Longhorns for the remainder of the offseason.
That proved to be the case on Aug. 17, as the Longhorns lost the commitment of highly touted four-star Katy Tompkins dual-threat quarterback Jalen Milroe to head coach Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide. Milroe announced that he would be flipping from Texas to Alabama on his Twitter timeline on Monday evening.
This is the second (or third depending on how you spin it) big loss for the Longhorns on the recruiting trail for the 2021 cycle in a matter of the last two months. Texas also lost the highly coveted Brockermeyer brothers to the Crimson Tide, with their commitments to Alabama that dropped on social media early last month.
Before he flipped to Alabama to start off the week, Milroe was the lone quarterback commit in the Longhorns 2021 class. Now Texas will be left looking for answers at the quarterback position, despite solid depth in the room from the past few recruiting classes. Texas signed a pair of talented four-star quarterbacks in their 2020 recruiting class, with Lake Travis product Hudson Card and Duncanville’s Ja’Quinden Jackson.
However, Milroe held offers from just shy of two dozen schools when he flipped to Alabama. The other highlighting schools on his offer sheet includes the Arkansas Razorbacks, Baylor Bears, Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Oregon Ducks, and Texas A&M Aggies.
Milroe ranks as the nation’s No. 82 2021 high school prospect, No. 4 dual-threat quarterback, and No. 10 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). The Katy, TX, native was recruited by Jeff Banks and Steve Sarkisian on the Alabama coaching staff. The final bit of recruitment that came from the Texas coaching staff was from recently hired offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich.
According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2021 Texas recruiting class now ranks at No. 14 in the nation and remains in the top spot in the Big 12. Losing the commitment of Milroe is a big hit to both the Longhorns 2021 class and their standing in the national class rankings. Alabama now sits at No. 2 in the national class rankings and remains in the top spot in the SEC.
