3. SMU Mustangs, American Athletic Conference

As one of the teams that is set to face a team from the Big 12 during the one week of non-conference games this fall, the SMU Mustangs might have the most exciting matchup of all that week. SMU takes on the TCU Horned Frogs in a battle for the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex on Sep. 12. Expect a true battle in that one.

The SMU football program is in a good spot right now, under the direction of former Cal Golden Bears head coach Sonny Dykes. Former Texas starting quarterback, and rising redshirt senior, Shane Buechele is leading the way for the Mustangs this year. SMU has a real chance to win the American Athletic Conference under Buechele’s wing.

As a whole, if SMU can sustain the level of success they’ve seen over the course of the last two years, they would make a lot of sense to include in this hypothetical expansion conversation in the Big 12. SMU is located in the same city as the Big 12 Championship Game (for football) and the conference’s offices (Dallas, TX).

SMU is setup to be in a good spot for the next few years with the way Dykes recruited among the very best Group of Five programs in recent years. They landed a commitment from the highly touted four-star Parish Episcopal pro-style quarterback Preston Stone for the 2021 class. SMU should only continue to standout among the very best football programs in the AAC for a good while.
