Texas Football: Jordan Whittington looking like a threat in fall camp
Certainly a skill position player to watch this fall for the Texas football program is going to be redshirt freshman wide receiver Jordan Whittington.
There’s a lot of exciting highlights coming out of fall camp for the Texas football program, since it began more than one week ago. Texas started fall/training camp back on Aug. 7, so they’re now around 10 days into actual practice. Prior to the start of training camp, Texas was ramping up into mandatory summer workouts throughout some of June and all of July.
Texas also has less than one month until the supposed start of the 2020 regular season. They are planned to open up the 2020 season, with the altered schedule in the midst of the novel coronavirus pandemic, against the UTEP Miners out of Conference-USA on Sep. 12 at home at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
With the start of the 2020 slate so close, head coach Tom Herman and his talented Longhorns team needs to start figuring out who their playmakers will be this fall. Texas does return more proven talent and experience on both sides of the ball this fall, than they did heading into last season.

Without a doubt, one of the key players to watch for the Longhorns this fall will be the rising redshirt freshman wide receiver Jordan Whittington. After moving back to his original position earlier in the offseason, Whittington should have a real shot to shine if he can stay healthy this year.

In spring camp last offseason, Herman moved Whittington from wide receiver to running back to help fill a key depth void. The running back room was really thin throughout most of last offseason. And it looked like a home run move to have Whittington play at running back, but a nagging sports hernia injury kept him out for pretty much his entire true freshman campaign.
So far in what we’ve seen and heard about him in fall camp, Whittington is putting on a show. He’ll definitely be counted on to be a breakthrough player in the receiving corps. With the former star senior wide receiver duo Devin Duvernay and Collin Johnson now getting their shot to play on Sundays, younger wideouts like Whittington and Jake Smith are going to be expected to take the next step this fall.
Whittington is a former five-star wide receiver recruit out of the Cuero High School in Cuero, TX, that was one of the higher rated signees in the Longhorns 2019 recruiting class. He ranked as the nation’s No. 34 2019 high school prospect, No. 2 athlete, and No. 6 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).
During his limited action last season, Whittington registered just 17 rushing yards on two carries. All the game experience he has at this point are those two reps from the season opener against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, and last year’s spring game.
