Texas Football: Longhorns have a new 2021 QB target in place?
After the loss of 4-Star dual-threat QB Jalen Milroe, the 2021 Texas football recruiting class could have their next target in sight with a 3-Star QB.
With the flip of the commitment of four-star Katy Tompkins dual-threat quarterback Jalen Milroe from the 2021 Texas football recruiting class to join the Alabama Crimson Tide, the depth at the position is now a bigger concern. Head coach Tom Herman and recently hired offensive coordinator were forced to move fast if they want to patch the depth at the quarterback position in the 2021 class before either the start of the 2020 season, or at a minimum the Early Signing Period.
Losing Milroe at this point of the recruiting cycle is difficult since pretty much every other quarterback prospect Texas had offered thus far already committed elsewhere. That’s why Herman and the Longhorns were forced to dig so deep at this point of the offseason to find their solution to the potential depth quarterback problem in the 2021 class.
It appears that one of the next targets in line at the quarterback position for the Longhorns 2021 class is three-star St. Thomas pro-style quarterback Maddox Kopp. This 6-foot-5 and 210 pound Houston, TX, native is one of the better remaining uncommitted high school prospects at the pro-style quarterback position.
Kopp ranks as the nation’s No. 668 2021 high school prospect, No. 25 pro-style quarterback, and No. 96 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). Since Texas isn’t going to find much among remaining uncommitted blue chip quarterbacks for this cycle, looking to someone like Kopp could be a good way to go.
Kopp seemingly fits well with the style of quarterback that Yurcich usually works with. He did work with Heisman contender Justin Fields last season with the Ohio State Buckeyes, but that was largely an exception. His last two quarterbacks he was success with during his run as the offensive coordinator with the Oklahoma State Cowboys were two large pro-style quarterbacks, Mason Rudolph and Taylor Cornelius.
As of the evening of Aug. 19, Kopp holds offers from more than a dozen schools. But he does not hold a Texas offer yet. That could be coming soon, though. The highlighting schools on his offer sheet includes the Colorado Buffaloes, Ole Miss Rebels, Houston Cougars, Tulane Green Wave, Wyoming Cowboys, Miami (OH) Redhawks, Central Michigan Chippewas, and Texas State Bobcats.
The commitment date, as of now, for Kopp looks to be set for Sep. 1. It will be interesting to see how Texas handles his recruitment in the coming days since they were reportedly (Horns247 paid content) in contact with him earlier this week.
If nothing else, Texas would have to get an offer out to him in the very near future. They don’t have much else to turn to, and Kopp definitely brings a good amount of value to the table in terms of how he would supposedly fit in Yurcich’s offensive system.
According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2021 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 14 in the nation and remains ahead of the Oklahoma Sooners for the top spot in the Big 12. They hold 16 commits in the 2021 class after the decommitment from Milroe.
