Texas Football: Mark Sanchez thinks Herman’s seat is heating up
Texas football once again comes into the 2020 season with high expectations, despite all of the distractions, that is facing head coach Tom Herman.
This will surely be an interesting season ahead for the Texas football program, as the 2020 college football season officially kicked off on Aug. 29, with FCS Central Arkansas knocking off Austin Peay. Head coach Tom Herman can now officially focus on football being back, and making sure Texas is headed in the right direction heading into his fourth year at the helm.
The 2020 season will definitely be the most important of the four that Herman spent on the Forty Acres to date. Athletic director Chris del Conte opened up the checkbook for Herman to retool the Longhorns coaching staff after a disappointing regular season last fall, where they finished up with only seven wins.
But the Alamo Bowl win over the Utah Utes, by a significant margin of 38-10, helped the Longhorns take some type of momentum heading into this offseason. Texas ultimately finished up the 2019 season with a record of 8-5 (5-4 Big 12), after beating Utah in the Alamo Bowl.
Apparently not everyone is sold on what the Longhorns bring to the table during the looming 2020 season. Former USC Trojans and New York Jets quarterback (and current ESPN college football media personality) Mark Sanchez gave his take on how the seat of Herman is still very hot heading into the 2020 season.
On a recent episode of ESPN’s “College Football Live” Sanchez opened up on the hot seat of Herman with the Longhorns this year. Here’s more on what Sanchez had to say on College Football Live on this matter (thanks to 247Sports).
"“That seat’s getting hot, baby,” Sanchez said on College Football Live. “You know those Texas fans, they want the Longhorns to win. I think they’ve got to prove something this year. We all know Sam Ehlinger, and we’re going to be looking at him. I’m looking at that outside linebacker, Joseph Ossai. This guy had five sacks in that game against Utah in their bowl game. He’s got a nose for the football. He’s got to be their leader on defense and help get the ball back to Sam Ehlinger to score points and win.”"
Herman did face a lot of obstacles to get his team to the point they’re at now. The 2020 offseason definitely presented its fair share of twists and turns thanks to all of the social activism and the novel coronavirus pandemic. But Texas is supposed to kickoff the 2020 regular season on Sep. 12 at home against the UTEP Miners.
Then Texas is set to open up Big 12 play on Sep. 26 on the road in Lubbock against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. They come into the 2020 campaign with the No. 14 slot in the AP Poll and the Coaches Poll.
