Texas Football: Analyst mentions Longhorns as his sleeper team in 2020
Heading into the 2020 season, the Texas football program has the chance to do something special in the Big 12 under Sam Ehlinger’s wing.
The 2020 college football season is now officially upon us after the FCS Central Arkansas Bears knocked off the Austin Peay Governors to open things up over the weekend. It won’t be all that long before the Texas football program begins their season. Texas is set to open up the season on Sep. 12 at home against the UTEP Miners out of Conference-USA. There is still a lot on the line for Texas this fall.
The Longhorns hold a top 15 ranking in both major preseason polls (including the Big Ten and PAC-12 teams). And there is one particular college football media personality/analyst with ESPN that buys into what the Longhorns bring to the table this year. Trevor Matich reportedly said on a recent ESPN segment that the Longhorns were his “surprise team” of 2020.
Apparently the driving force behind Matich mentioning the Longhorns as his potential surprise team of the 2020 college football season is what they get from rising star senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger. Along with Oklahoma Sooners former five-star recruit and redshirt freshman quarterback Spencer Rattle, and Oklahoma State Cowboys rising redshirt junior star running back Chuba Hubbard, Ehlinger should be one of the premier Heisman contenders out of the Big 12.
Ehlinger now has more than 10,000 career total yards from scrimmage, 68 passing touchdowns, 22 interceptions, and 25 rushing touchdowns. Last season was actually his most productive to date in his three years playing for the Longhorns. But hopefully this is the year where Ehlinger and the Longhorns piece it all together and finally get that highly coveted Big 12 Championship to dethrone Oklahoma.
Texas has a two week break between when they face UTEP in the season opener and then take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders on the road in Lubbock in the Big 12 opener. They’ll need a strong start to the regular season, before the thick of the schedule hits in Big 12 play against the likes of the Oklahoma schools, TCU Horned Frogs, Baylor Bears, etc.
Texas finished up the 2019 season with a record of 8-5 (5-4 Big 12) after knocking off the Utah Utes in the Alamo Bowl in convincing fashion by the final score of 38-10. They’ll certainly be one of the teams to watch, along with the Oklahoma schools, in the race to win the Big 12 in 2020.
