Big 12 Football: Ranking 5 best players for the 2020 season
3) Best players in the Big 12 for the 2020 season: Trevon Moehrig, Safety
The strongest part of the TCU defense this fall is going to be the secondary. The Horned Frogs boast one of the more productive and experienced returning groups of defensive back starters in the Big 12 this year. And that will all be spearheaded by the talented rising junior 6-foot-2 and 210 pound safety Trevon Moehrig.
Apparently Pro Football Focus rated Moehrig as the most valuable returning safety, not just in the Big 12, but in the entire country this year. That is a high mark for a player that doesn’t get a whole lot of recognition on a national level. But that is largely the world of being a top tier defensive back in the Big 12.
Moehrig is going to have a bright future on Sundays as a potential early round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He could very well be the first safety off of the board out of the Big 12 come the 2021 NFL Draft.
What he brings to the table for the Horned Frogs this fall is a defensive back that registered 77 career total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 12 pass deflections, five interceptions, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery. He was one of the nation’s leaders in pass deflections last season, with 11.
The Spring Branch, TX, native and former unheralded three-star recruit Moehrig was a gem find on the trail for head coach Gary Patterson and the Horned Frogs. TCU has a very potent safety duo returning this fall between Moehrig and one of the Big 12’s interception leaders from last season in rising junior Ar’Darius Washington.
