Texas Football: Freshman WR Dajon Harrison passing on 2020 season
Texas football will now be missing true freshman wide receiver Dajon Harrison for the 2020 season, as he opts out in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
More than three players out of the Texas football program have now elected to opt out of the 2020 season, in the midst of the novel coronavirus pandemic, from news that dropped in the last month or so. Texas lost senior running back Daniel Young, senior defensive lineman Marqez Bimage, and former JUCO transfer offensive lineman Willie Tyler, now along with true freshman wide receiver Dajon Harrison this year.
All four of those players have opted out of the 2020 college football season, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, as the Longhorns are now really racking up the losses. Texas looked to be rather unscathed entering the month of August in terms of playing opting out of the 2020 season. But losing the likes of Young and Bimage really hurt the depth at their respective positions on each side of the ball.
And losing the likes of Tyler and Harrison will hurt the future depth and experience in the trenches on offense and in the receiving corps. Tyler is entering what would be his second year of his college career on the Forty Acres. He’s a former three-star JUCO offensive line recruit that signed with the Longhorns in the 2019 class.
Moreover, Harrison was an unheralded three-star wide receiver out of Hutto High School in Hutto, TX, who signed with the Longhorns as part of the 2020 recruiting class. Harrison is the latest Longhorn to announce he is opting out of the 2020 season. The first report that he is opting out this year came from Anwar Richardson of Orange Bloods.
The 5-foot-10 and 170 pound Texas native Harrison likely would’ve been pretty far down the Longhorns depth chart this fall. But who knows how the playing time could’ve been divided out given the weird 2020 season ahead.
What Texas football is missing with Dajon Harrison opting out
Coming out of Hutto High School this past recruiting cycle, Harrison ranked as the nation’s No. 541 2020 high school prospect, No. 87 wide receiver, and No. 70 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). He picked Texas over offers from more than a dozen other schools.
The other highlighting schools on Harrison’s offer sheet included the Arizona Wildcats, Arizona State Sun Devils, Kansas State Wildcats, TCU Horned Frogs, Boston College Eagles, Houston Cougars, Iowa State Cyclones, New Mexico Lobos, and Texas State Bobcats. He also had a reported scout look from the Baylor Bears.
Harrison is very versatile and quick in tight areas with the ball in his hands. He’s the type of skill position player that can be a threat from multiple different points off the line of scrimmage. While it would’ve been fun to see what he could do for the Longhorns early in his college career, there are plenty of players that have opted out of this season (and understandably so).
