1) Texas football starters who could lose their job: Jake Smith, Wide Receiver

One of the starting wide receiver slots in this Longhorns offense should be occupied by the former four-star Arizona native recruit and rising sophomore Jake Smith at the outset of the 2020 season. Smith proved himself enough to at least get a starting role out of the gates this year in the receiving corps with the production he posted as a true freshman.

Red hot out of the gates last season, Smith didn’t finish out as well as he started. The versatile 6-foot and 200 pound threat that is usually reliable with his hands and runs great routes does need to find more consistency in the receiving game this fall. Smith still brings plenty of promise to the table entering his second year on the Forty Acres.

Last season, Smith registered 25 catches for 274 receiving yards, and six touchdowns. He has more touchdowns than any other returning wide receiver for the Longhorns this fall. But his special teams production and yards per catch weren’t up to par with the type of efficiency that most fans thought he could put up as a freshman.

Texas will need more out of Smith this fall than the numbers he put up as a freshman. With Collin Johnson and Devin Duvernay gone, Texas will be counting on the likes of Brennan Eagles and Smith way more often. But considering the Longhorns did bring in Brenden Schooler and Tarik Black out of the transfer portal (and have redshirt freshman Jordan Whittington apparently healthy and ready to go), the starting wideout job for Smith could be under threat for most of the season.
