3 takeaways from Shane Buechele’s nailbiting Week 1 win over Texas St
2) Takeaways from Shane Buechele’s Week 1 performance: The Texas State turnover bug
One trend that Buechele couldn’t shake in this slight win over Texas State was the amount of turnovers they force when playing against him. Buechele finished this game with 367 passing yards, only 10 incompletions, more than 10 yards per pass, one passing touchdown, and two interceptions.
But one of the overarching parts of his stat line from this win unfortunately will be the two interceptions and the less than stellar 1/2 touchdown/interception ratio. He only had 10 interceptions total last season, and two of those came in SMU’s non-conference win at home over Texas State.
In the back-end of the home-and-home series, Buechele couldn’t really shake that turnover bug from the Bobcats. Both teams struggled to not turn the ball over in general, though. Buechele’s two picks were just 40 percent of the turnovers for both teams on the day. There were also a couple of fumbles where the same team was able to recover.
This is a really weird trend for Buechele that he can toss a number of picks against opponents that he should be stout in terms of passing accuracy. The two teams that Buechele now has the most interceptions in his career against are Texas State and the Kansas Jayhawks (four picks a piece for each opponent).
That now makes it six passing touchdowns and eight interceptions combined in four tries against Texas State and Kansas.
