1) Former Texas football players to watch in Week 1: Shane Buechele, QB

By far the most important former Longhorn transfer to watch in Week 1 of action this college football season is ex-Texas quarterback and four-star recruit hailing from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, redshirt senior Shane Buechele. Once he was edged out by star senior Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger in the race to land the starting job on the Forty Acres, Buechele put his name in the transfer portal the following offseason.

Buechele stuck around as Ehlinger’s backup throughout the 2018 season, but promptly transferred closer to home last offseason. And he did a great job out of the gates for SMU last season, leading them to their first 10 win season since all of the scandal that hurt the program back in 1984.

During his three years playing at Texas, Buechele registered 4,636 passing yards, 30 passing touchdowns, 16 interceptions, 268 rushing yards, four rushing touchdowns, 7.0 adjusted yards per passing attempt, and a 132.6 passer efficiency rating. In his inaugural season with the Mustangs, Buechele registered 3,929 passing yards, 34 passing touchdowns, 10 interceptions, 8.5 adjusted yards per passing attempt, 105 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, and a 148.8 passer efficiency rating.

Buechele and the Mustangs struggled to separate from Texas State out of the gates in their season opener. SMU went into the locker room at halftime tied with the Bobcats, after they opened as more than three possession favorites. Buechele did have more than 175 passing yards in the first half, but no passing touchdowns and one interception.
