Eagles waive former Texas football QB/TE Tyrone Swoopes
Former Texas football quarterback and converted tight end Tyrone Swoopes was waived by the Philadelphia Eagles back on Sep. 3.
One of the initial names that dropped heading into the weekend in terms of former players out of the Texas football program that was waived in the latest round of roster cuts around the NFL is tight end Tyrone Swoopes. The former Longhorns dual-threat quarterback and converted tight end Swoopes was actually one of the more surprising cuts around the NFL among Texas Exes over the weekend.
It was not more than two months ago that the Philadelphia Eagles signed the sizable skill position weapon Swoopes. But they announced in an official team release on Sep. 5 that Swoopes would be one of nine more players waived ahead of the opening week of the 2020 season.
Other significant names on the list of players waived by the Eagles this weekend included former West Virginia cornerback Rasul Douglas, Washington defensive back Sidney Jones, and Michigan State defensive tackle Raequan Williams.
But Swoopes was originally waived by the Eagles on Sep. 3, as part of a list of a dozen players that will no longer be with the organization if they aren’t signed to the practice squad this weekend. Other significant names that Swoopes went out the door with in Philly included Cincinnati running back Michael Warren, Georgia running back Elijah Holyfield, USC wide receiver Deaontay Burnett, and Baylor defensive back Grayland Arnold.
Swoopes started out his run in the NFL as an undrafted free agent signing back during the 2017 offseason with the Seattle Seahawks. He spent three years with the Seahawks before he hit the free agent market and signed with the Eagles.
But the Eagles obviously didn’t keep Swoopes around for long before putting him back on waivers before their Sep. 13 season opener against Washington.
In three years playing with the Seahawks, Swoopes got game action in seven contests (three of which he started in). He registered two catches for 28 receiving yards. Most of the role he held with the Seahawks offense was as a blocker. He took 109 offensive snaps in the three seasons combined with the Seahawks, and 19 total on special teams.
During his four years playing quarterback for Texas, Swoopes registered just over 3,000 passing yards, 17 passing touchdowns, 13 interceptions, 966 rushing yards, and 24 rushing touchdowns. He might be able to get another shot elsewhere around the NFL, but the Eagles cutting Swoopes heading into the weekend was a bit jostling.
