Former Texas football WR Lil’Jordan Humphrey let go by Saints
A former Texas football wide receiver, Lil’Jordan Humphrey, did not make it through the latest round of roster cuts with the Saints.
The New Orleans Saints had a few former Texas football players on the roster, until they narrowed down the list to 53. A number of former Longhorns in general were let go in the latest round of roster cuts around the NFL. And one of those that was let go among the former Longhorns is wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey.
Texas saw Humphrey as one of the bigger fallers down draft boards last year. But he did bring plenty of talent and proven production to the table after a breakthrough junior campaign on the Forty Acres. He was just unable to parlay that into a better draft stock come the first night of the 2019 NFL Draft.
There was only one game that Humphrey started in last season. He played in five games in total during his rookie campaign, and seemed destined to have a potential future in NOLA as an undrafted free agent. Humphrey fell far down draft boards last year after a rather bad showing prior to the first night of the 2019 NFL Draft.
The Saints had a team official release on Sep. 5 that announced the news that Humphrey was one of 17 players that was waived. Other significant players that the Saints waived on Sep. 5 included former Mississippi State quarterback/tight end Tommy Stevens, Tennessee tight end Ethan Wolf, Notre Dame running back Tony Jones Jr., and Michigan State linebacker Joe Bachie.
Where former Texas football WR Lil’Jordan Humphrey goes from here?
Will Humphrey get a chance elsewhere?
He surely had a good enough junior campaign to warrant another shot at least with a camp roster or practice squad. His length and ability to rack up yards after the catch should be enough to land him another contract elsewhere around the NFL.
Humphrey did have a decent showing during the 2019 preseason, including an early touchdown catch from former BYU quarterback and Saints skill position weapon Taysom Hill. If Humphrey can continue to show that he can improve from here on out, then he’ll get some shot somewhere else over the course of the next 8-12 months.
During his three years playing for Texas, Humphrey registered 137 touches, for just under 1,700 total yards from scrimmage, and 12 total touchdowns. He had just shy of 1,200 receiving yards and nine receiving touchdowns as a junior, during the 2018 season.
