Texas Football: Updated DB depth chart ahead of 2020 season
Projected Texas football DB depth chart: Cornerback
CB2: Jalen Green, Junior
At least at the outset of the 2020 season, the other starting cornerback spot should go to the former blue chip four-star prospect and junior corner Jalen Green. There was no single defensive back for the Longhorns last season that had a more up and down run than Green. He was absolutely torched in the loss to the LSU Tigers at home last season.
In that loss to LSU, Green was targeted nine times, and gave up eight receptions for more than 130 yards and no pass breakups in the process. But in the win over the Utah Utes in the Alamo Bowl and the loss to the Iowa State Cyclones he was stellar. Green registered one of the better coverage grades on the team and allowed less than a completion percentage of 50 when targeted.
Green is coming back this season off of 30 total tackles, two tackles for loss, and five pass deflections, from last year.
CB2 Backup: Josh Thompson, Redshirt Junior
One of the more experienced and proven backups that the Longhorns will bring back at any position group on either side of the ball this fall will be the redshirt junior defensive back Josh Thompson. The former converted nickelback/safety brings back 46 career total tackles, one tackle for loss, and two pass breakups with him this year.
The 6-foot and 200 pound Thompson should be a reliable backup for Green this fall, or Jamison if he gets injured. Thompson and Watson II also help Ash get valuable depth if he needs to add a third and/or fourth cornerback to any certain secondary package. But there are times where Thompson can get turned around in pass coverage, and he usually doesn’t grade out as one of the better defensive backs on the roster.
