Projected Texas football DB depth chart: SPUR

SPUR: Anthony Cook, Junior

The former converted cornerback/nickelback and talented four-star in-state recruit Anthony Cook might get the starting SPUR spot in Ash’s secondary heading into his junior season. But the leash likely won’t be long if Cook is inconsistent in coverage and coming up to make plays at the line of scrimmage again this fall.

Cook definitely had a weird offseason, even by the usual consideration in the midst of the novel coronavirus pandemic. He put his name in the NCAA Transfer Portal earlier in the offseason, but wound up returning to the Forty Acres about a month ago.

Anyhow, Cook brings back with him 42 career total tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, three pass deflections, and one forced fumble. But he was actually one of the better graded defensive backs in coverage last year for the Longhorns. There was only one game where he was really torched, and that was weirdly enough against the Kansas Jayhawks (5 catches against for 80 yards and 1 score).

SPUR Backup: Chris Adimora, Sophomore

Last year, the former four-star recruit and sophomore defensive back Chris Adimora was pretty impressive in limited playing time. If Cook slips up or has injury troubles early in this campaign, then we should see Adimora potentially taking his starting spot.

Adimora brings back with him 10 total tackles and two pass deflections from his freshman campaign. He was also good when it mattered a ton at times last season, in highly graded wins over the Oklahoma State Cowboys and Utah in the Alamo Bowl.
