1) Texas football players to watch in Week 1: Roschon Johnson, RB

Any number of Longhorns at the skill positions could be the ones to watch in the season opener. It just so happens that about the deepest and most talented position group for Texas on the offensive side of the ball this fall lies in the backfield. Newly hired offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich truly has a plethora of talent to work with at the running back position.

It could all start with junior running back Keaontay Ingram, but there’s a lot that sophomore and former converted quarterback Roschon Johnson and the nation’s top 2020 running back Bijan Robinson bring to the table. Keaontay and Roschon combined for more than 1,900 total yards from scrimmage and 19 total touchdowns in 2019.

During his true freshman campaign, Johnson registered 649 rushing yards, seven rushing touchdowns, 5.3 yards per carry, 23 receptions, 158 receiving yards, and one touchdown catch. He averaged 6.9 yards per catch last season. He was about the most efficient skill position player that the Longhorns had down the stretch last year (outside of quarterback Sam Ehlinger).

His blocking, rushing, offensive, and fumble grades are among the best running backs that the Longhorns had in the mix in the last decade. He didn’t fumble a single time last season. The pure amount of versatility and ball security that he brings to the table could make him a special running back for the Longhorns this fall.
