1) Texas football DB’s that must step up in B.J. Foster’s absence: Caden Sterns

The most notable Texas defensive back that has to step up, not just in the wake of the Foster news, but in general for this secondary is junior safety Caden Sterns. Fellow former five-star recruit and Texas native Sterns was the highlighting commit in the Longhorns 2018 class, along with Foster.

It will be difficult for Sterns to not have his impactful running partner at the safety and/or nickelback positions out there with him this fall. Again if this news holds up for Foster quitting the team, then Sterns is going to have a lot more pressure put on his shoulders to be a real star for the Longhorns in 2020.

Texas got a pretty good season debut from the 6-foot-1 and 205 pound Sterns in the season opening win over UTEP. He registered four total tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss, and one pass deflection in this game. Sterns was targeted on two occasions in this game, and didn’t allow a single completion against.

Next. 3 takeaways from the win over UTEP. dark

For his career to date, Sterns registered 125 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, four interceptions, and six pass deflections. His best season in pass coverage still was his true freshman campaign two years ago. But he started to become a more well-rounded defensive back last season, as he graded out much higher in defending the run.
