A monumental win for the Texas football program, especially in terms of the lead that they jumped out to in the first half, over the UTEP Miners out of Conference-USA in the season opener can give them a lot of momentum heading into the Big 12 opener.
On a rough day for the Big 12 as a whole, the Longhorns and the rival Oklahoma Sooners were two of the bright spots. Texas and Oklahoma were both able to take care of business in the opening weekend of the Big 12’s portion of the college football season. Oklahoma knocked off the FCS Missouri State Bears by a big 48-0 margin. And the Longhorns got the best of UTEP by a dominant final score of 59-3.
In the first half, Texas took a giant 45-3 lead by the time both teams headed into the locker room at halftime. Texas did slow down a bit in the second half, as a lot of the starters on both sides of the ball were yanked. But that definitely didn’t keep the defense from shutting down the UTEP offense in both halves.
Moreover, the Longhorns came into this game with high expectations. They held the No. 14 ranking in both major preseason polls, and that even included the two Power Five conferences that might not play a usual fall football season. They were massive 44-point favorites over UTEP at kick off, and definitely proved that was a valid betting line.
